Kid: Can I get some water? I need it to push down my food.
Almost always, my answer to the question to leave the library is ‘no’. I only get my students for a short time and I need every minute. Occasionally, I get students with medical needs that require delicacy (upset stomach, headache, UTI…). My teachers make sure to notify me if it is something I need to know for that class period. Sometimes, I get students who frequently need to use the bathroom (diabetes, medication side effects) or that I need to watch for certain behaviors (heart condition, seizers, asthma, allergies).
**If you have a student with a long term medical need and that student has been in your library, you should have been notified, with what you need to know, in writing (in my district, I have to sign for it) at the beginning of the year or whenever the student starts at the school. Sadly, as an ‘enrichment teacher’ I sometimes get forgotten. If I have a concern, and I haven’t been notified, I will hunt down the information. I will talk to both the teacher and the school counselor.
Remember: you are responsible for ALL of the students in your library- including those with medical needs.
